Dhows have been an integral part of Arab culture for almost 1500 years now. However, they’ve slowly changed their primary function. They started as means of transportation of goods, and have since evolved into the sports props they are today. That being the case, it’s no wonder Dubai Traditional dhow sailing race has as much traction as it does in the UAE. This year’s event, together with the 26th Dubai World Cup at Meydan, is going to be the most enticing sporting event of 2021. Because of that, you should make sure not to miss it.

Dubai Traditional dhow sailing race – a race with true tradition

The traditional dhow sailing race in Dubai isn’t only very culturally relevant but is also reserved for locals only. Of course, everyone is invited to watch but only native UAE residents can compete. That is important because it’s the last Dubai sporting event that is for locals exclusively. Other sports leagues like Dubai football, swimming, and running leagues are all welcoming of foreigners. That is wonderful since it promotes unity and acceptance among people. However, preserving a piece of culture in a form of an event, such as dhow sailing race, is equally as important.

The deets

This year’s race is, as always, organized by Dubai International Marine Club. The race is split into two parts. The dates are as follows:

  • Heat One for 60ft dhows – February 20th, 2021
  • Heat Two for 60ft dhows – March 20th, 2020

As usual, the race is free to watch. If you’re interested in 22ft and 43ft dhows, you might have to wait a bit longer. These races usually happen in October through December, so it’s safe to assume they’ll be coming towards the end of 2021.

Experience dhow

Watching this dhow race might inspire you to try dhow yourself. Unfortunately, sailing and navigating dhow is extremely hard. That’s why it’s reserved only for professionals. All of these professionals, especially those who compete are in great shape and have to train regularly with the finest fitness instructor Dubai has to offer. However, there are still ways to experience dhow.
